This will open the gate for the hackers to hack into your outdated blog and if your blog is present in the same domain where your main site is present for e.g. www.yoursite.com/blog then the hackers can easily intrude into your site. In addition to this if you own an eCommerce site then your loss will be very high by donating all the customer related info to the hackers.
If you are this type then you can just remove the blog from your site. So that there will be no loss to you from this action and there will be no threat to your site too. There are many good hosted CMSs like Tumblr, Blogger etc. Create a blog and start using it since everything is taken care by the service provider.
Do you use the blog rarely and leave them outdated?
If you use the blog occasionally and no software update/development is done, then your blog will remain outdated. This will also open the gate for the hackers to hack into your outdated blog and if your blog is present in the same domain where your main site is present for e.g. www.yoursite.com/blog then the hackers can easily corrupt your site. In addition to this if you are an eCommerce customer then your loss will be very high by donating all the customer related info to the hackers.
If you are this type and your eCommerce store built with systems like X-Cart/Magento/CS-Cart then you can use the inbuilt CMS available in these platforms itself. In-built CMS will not have great features as like regular blog software, but they can fulfill your actual purpose really and for your rare usage this will come in handy. Yes! I love blogging or having a team of professionals to do!
You should focus on version updates of your blog too because if you leave the blog outdated the hackers can easily hack your blog. It is not recommended for regular bloggers to use same domain blogs as like www.yoursite.com/blog. You can go with blog.yoursite.com to enhance security and promoting your blog won’t affect anything in your site.
Have your blog in a separate domain like www.blog.yourwebsite.com so even if your blog is hacked your website will remain unaffected. Otherwise go for a hosted blog systems like the Tumblr, blogspot, WordPress etc so that you will have regular update to your blog which will make your blog secure from hackers. If you still still need to go with your own blog then you should be updating it frequently with the latest version and you should monitor this regularly so that it should not be outdated.
