Magento to Shopify Migration —
From Enterprise Platform
to Modern Stack.

Most migration tools don't understand Magento custom modules. They migrate products and orders — and leave your custom checkout logic, B2B pricing tiers, ERP integration and custom module data behind. MercuryMinds has been building on Magento since 2008 and on Shopify since the platform became viable for serious commerce. We migrate everything, including what migration tools miss.

What Migrates

Everything that matters —
and honest about what doesn't.

Migrates Completely

What transfers

  • All products, variants and attribute sets (including complex EAV attribute structures)
  • Full order history — no 12-month truncation
  • Customer accounts, address books and order history
  • Product images and downloadable files
  • Category tree (mapped to Shopify collections)
  • SEO URLs with comprehensive 301 redirect implementation
  • CMS pages and blocks (migrated as Shopify pages)
  • Customer groups and segmentation data
  • Wishlist data (where Shopify app equivalent configured)
  • Bundle and grouped product structures (assessed individually)

Needs Assessment

What requires planning

  • Magento custom modules — each assessed individually; rebuilt as Shopify apps or custom Liquid/API solutions where needed
  • Magento complex B2B functionality (company accounts, credit limits, purchase order workflows) — requires Shopify B2B (Plus only) or custom build
  • Magento 1-specific data structures — migrated via Magento 1 export scripts before Magento-to-Shopify migration
  • Customer passwords — Shopify cannot import Magento hashed passwords; customers set new password on first login
  • Adobe Commerce (Enterprise) features not available in Shopify — documented and alternative solutions proposed at scoping

Every custom module and enterprise feature is documented at scoping with a proposed solution — rebuilt in Shopify, replaced by a Shopify app or acknowledged as a feature not being replicated. Nothing undocumented.

How It Works

Five stages —
from scoping to signed-off live site.

Fixed price and fixed timeline agreed at stage 1. Nothing starts until the full scope is documented and agreed.

Scoping & Module Audit

Full Magento installation audit: custom module inventory, third-party extension list, database size, product count (including configurable, bundle, grouped), order history depth, customer segment data, ERP/CRM integrations and B2B functionality. Fixed price and timeline produced.

Shopify Build & App Configuration

Shopify or Shopify Plus store built. Theme developed or configured. Shopify app equivalents for Magento modules identified, installed and configured. Payment gateways, tax, shipping and B2B functionality configured. All done before data migration begins.

Custom Migration Scripts

Migration scripts built for your Magento version (1.x or 2.x) and database. Products (including configurable products with all variants), orders, customers, CMS content and SEO metadata extracted and transformed to Shopify data format.

Testing & Verification

Complete data migration to Shopify staging. Product count verified against Magento source. Order history validated. All 301 redirects tested. Checkout, integrations and custom functionality tested end-to-end. Sign-off required before DNS switch.

Go-Live & SEO Monitoring

DNS switched on agreed date. Magento maintained in read-only mode for 30 days. Google Search Console updated, sitemap resubmitted and crawl errors monitored daily for two weeks post-launch. Full project documentation delivered.

Why MercuryMinds

We have built on both platforms.
That is what makes the difference.

Magento Depth

Magento development since the platform launched in 2008

We know Magento's EAV data model, the custom module architecture, how Magento 1 data differs from Magento 2, and what Magento can do that Shopify can't. We tell you the latter honestly at scoping — not after you've gone live.

Shopify Experience

17+ years of commerce engineering — Shopify since early adoption

Shopify development from single-store builds to Shopify Plus enterprise. We know which Magento module functionality Shopify can replicate natively, which needs an app, and which needs custom Liquid or API work.

SEO Continuity

The redirect map is built before go-live — not after

Magento URL structures are typically complex (category/subcategory/product paths with .html suffixes). The redirect map covers every page — product pages, category pages, CMS pages, blog posts — tested before DNS switch.

How do I migrate from Magento to Shopify?

A Magento to Shopify migration involves four core steps. First, a full audit of the Magento installation — cataloguing all products (including configurable, bundle and grouped product types), custom modules, third-party extensions, order history, customer data and integrations. Second, building the Shopify environment in parallel — theme, Shopify app equivalents for Magento modules, payment gateways, tax and shipping, B2B configuration if needed. Third, running custom migration scripts that extract data from the Magento database and transform it to Shopify's data format — not generic migration tools that miss Magento-specific data structures. Fourth, comprehensive testing of the migrated data, 301 redirect implementation and end-to-end functionality testing before DNS switch. MercuryMinds handles all four steps as a fixed-price project.

What is the cost of Magento to Shopify migration?

Magento to Shopify migration costs depend on four factors: the number of products and the complexity of product types (configurable products with large attribute sets, bundle products and grouped products all add complexity), the number and complexity of custom Magento modules that need equivalent functionality on Shopify, the depth of order history and the size of the customer database, and whether B2B functionality needs to be replicated. Reference pricing: a straightforward Magento 2 to Shopify migration (under 10,000 SKUs, standard Magento with minimal custom modules) typically costs £7,000–£14,000. A mid-complexity migration (10,000–50,000 SKUs, several custom modules, ERP integration) typically costs £14,000–£28,000. A complex migration (50,000+ SKUs, heavily customised Magento, enterprise B2B functionality) is scoped individually and typically costs £28,000+. All projects are fixed-price.

How long does Magento to Shopify migration take?

A straightforward Magento 2 to Shopify migration (under 10,000 SKUs, standard Magento extensions, minimal custom module development required) typically takes 8–12 weeks from scoping to go-live. A mid-complexity migration (significant custom modules requiring Shopify app or custom build equivalents, large product catalogue) typically takes 12–18 weeks. A large-scale migration (Magento enterprise with complex B2B, large catalogue, multiple integrations) typically takes 18–26 weeks. Magento 1 migrations have an additional complexity: the Magento 1 database structure is different from Magento 2, requiring version-specific migration scripts. MercuryMinds provides a fixed timeline in the project scope.

Can I migrate Magento 1 to Shopify?

Yes. MercuryMinds migrates from Magento 1 (including versions 1.7, 1.8, 1.9 and Magento Community 1.9.x) directly to Shopify — without requiring an intermediate upgrade to Magento 2 first. Magento 1 reached end-of-life in June 2020 and no longer receives security updates; migrating directly to Shopify from Magento 1 is often faster and lower risk than first upgrading to Magento 2 before migrating. The Magento 1 database schema is different from Magento 2, so we use Magento 1-specific migration scripts that understand the M1 EAV structure, the M1 order and customer data models, and M1-specific extension data.

What custom Magento features can be replicated in Shopify?

Most standard Magento functionality has a Shopify equivalent — native or via app. What replicates well: configurable products (Shopify variants), layered navigation / faceted search (Shopify apps: Boost Commerce, SearchPie), custom pricing rules and discounts (Shopify Scripts or Shopify Plus functions), customer groups for wholesale pricing (Shopify B2B on Plus, or third-party B2B apps), product reviews (Shopify app), wishlist (Shopify app), store credit (Shopify app), and email marketing automation (Klaviyo, Shopify Email). What does not replicate without significant custom development: Magento's complex B2B company account structure with credit limits and PO workflows (requires Shopify Plus B2B or custom build), multi-source inventory across many warehouses (Shopify's multi-location inventory handles most cases; very complex MSI configurations require custom work), and Magento's rule-based advanced pricing engine (Shopify's Scripts/Functions handle most but not all use cases). Every item is assessed at scoping with a proposed Shopify solution or an honest acknowledgement that the feature is not replicable.
